A quick post today as I am on the way to Malaga Airport in a few hours. Taking my boyfriend for his flight back to the UK after his one month visit.

So, what prompted today’s post?   THE WIND!! and  a news item on British TV against the development of wind power.  We have high winds here today, at 800m above sea level we are prone to extremes of weather.  We also look out on wind turbines on the mountain, one of many in this area.

Andalucía is the perfect place for renewable energy.  In fact one of Europe’s largest solar farms is in Andalucía.  Spain has become a wind energy powerhouse and ranked second in the world in 2005 for total installed capacity (behind Germany and ahead of the USA.)

Interestingly a lot of companies have sprung up to support and develop the technology required.

With a thirty percent annual growth in the sector Spain is poised to continue this trend toward powering its economic and technological growth using the strong winds that sweep over the mountains and plains.

So, love em or hate em?

Are the complainants in the UK just NIMBY’s? (not in my back yard)

Would they prefer to see a nuclear power plant?

Are they prepared to turn off their electricity and go back to using  gas lamps?

Are there genuine concerns that they will ruin the landscape?

Is it more important to have renewable energy or should worldwide power consumption be reduced?

What do you think?

About Living in rural Spain

I live in Andalucía in the beautiful southern part of Spain. It is the largest of the 17 regions of Spain and Andalucía is broken down into 8 provinces and I live in the province of Granada. Having lived here for more than a decade I call Spain my home. I am originally from England. I find the scenery here in Spain stunning. There are amazing sunsets and the colours of wild flowers, almond blossom and poppy fields in the Spring and trees in the area are an inspiration.

What is the difference between electric pylons marching across the countryside and producing equal negative effects than wind turbines have? The change needs to be made at grass roots level ie usage and thinking in the home and factory. Everyone wants the latest high tech’ gizmo, time saving home appliances, a form of transport that says such and such about the owner etc. But this is at the cost of the invironment and more and more demand on energy. We as individuals have to make the personal choices. Do I really need this, do I really have to do it this way? Are we any happier? Are we really that more connected with each other. I am not suggesting going back to cavemen existance but instead making less demands on the environemnt and making life more simple and being with each other face to face.
