AMAPOLA (Spanish for poppy) SEASON ARRIVES IN ANDALUCÍA
The poppy season has arrived in Andalucía and the hedgerows and fields are starting to show the beautiful red of the corn poppy.
There are many species of poppy including a wind poppy, a prickly poppy and a pygmy poppy (try saying that 3 times!!)
Some poppies are cultivated as a source of drugs or food, the opium poppy is used so widely that international agencies monitor its production.
Of course as a food source we get poppy seeds and oil.
They are also used symbolically, remembrance of soldiers who have died in wars, a symbol of sleep, peace, death and resurrection and are a common feature as the central flower in South American weddings.
In Ancient Egypt doctors used poppy seeds as pain relief, makes sense as the seeds are said to contain morphine and codeine. Is that why Dorothy fell asleep in the field of poppies in the film The Wizard of Oz?
And maybe Maximus thinks it’s even better than catnip!!!!
